Where and How Does PPM Operate?
PPM delivers social programs limited geographically to the three local Punta de Mita villages, Coral del Risco, Emiliano Zapata, and Higuera Blanca. Current and future PPM programs are, and will be delivered solely in 3 program categories: Education, Health/Lifestyle, and Community Pride. PPM operates out of the Peace Punta de Mita Center in Emiliano Zapata.
Who manages PPM?
PPM Executive Director is Cecilia [Ceci] Paredes and she has a very high standing in the three villages. Ceci reports monthly to the PPM Board and submits a report including monthly financial results comparing actual to budget.
How much staff does PPM have?
PPM’s staff, all active in program delivery, in addition to the Executive Director, consists of 11 teachers [1 supervisor, 8 fulltime, and 2 part time].
Who are the Homeowners behind PPM?
PPM began operations on April 1, 2013 and was founded by a group of Punta Mita homeowners. The PPM Board of Directors and Board Advisors are all Punta Mita homeowners with financial “skin in the game”, maintaining a rolling commitment to support the annual Pledge For Peace fundraising campaign. The seven 2015/2016 Board members are: Mary Corroon, Mariette Woestemeyer, Bob Farquharson, John Gladish, Peter Newton [chair], Rob Ritchie, and Roberto Santacruz. The 2014/2016 Advisors to the Board are Bob Dahl, Jay Precourt, Valerie Ewell, and Stan Grad. Deeply engaged, are the Committee Chaire, who too are Punta Mita homeowners/residents: Tania Ritchie and Paty Vergara.
What parameters are being or have been put into place to assure PPM’s success?
Peace Punta de Mita will grow slowly, building upon success, to serve our local communities with focused, targeted and meaningful program delivery. PPM believes in long term sustainability and already has a strong balance sheet with a significant reserve being built. PPM has operational transparency. It welcomes all existing and potential donors, committee members, and advisors to its annual General Assembly held within 90 days of its year-end. Does PPM have low overhead?
Yes, the Ejido leases the building to PPM without charging rent, and the Ejido also pays for water and electricity. Administration costs are less than 5% of revenue.
Where does PPM’s revenue come from?
Over 90% of PPM’s revenues come from the annual Pledge For Peace fundraising campaign. For the 2015 Pledge For Peace Fundraising Campaign, there were about 56 Punta de Mita homeowner families that made donations exceeding USD500,000.
Other revenues come from homeowner donors who provide funds to purchase equipment such as photocopiers, and from visiting groups to the Four Seasons Resort and direct funds to PPM rather than take value from the Resort’s Group Amenity Program. In November of 2014, and again in 2015, proceeds from the Flavors community event are donated equally to PPM and to the Foundation.
What is the Avanza program and who attends it?
Avanza students are children at risk who, for a variety of reasons, dropped out of state school system and who now attend full time classes at PPM. Currently for the 2015/2016 school year, there are 21 Avanza students and the goal is to raise their academic standing in order to re-qualify them for re-entry into the state system within 2 years from their start at Avanza. The reasons for dropping out include: some are undocumented [no birth certificates, etc], some have been expelled from public school, some are from families who move between towns in the middle of the school year so, the children can´t get into the regular public school until the next school year.
Does Avanza grant a Mexican recognized diploma?
Yes, Avanza works in conjunction with INEA (Mexican National Institute for Adult Education) which provides the official documents to passing students. Once the appropriate documents are granted, Avanza students can be accepted into the state school system.
Besides English, Campeones and Avanza, what other PPM education programs are there?
-Computer Instruction. At the PPM site there are 14 computers and a ½ day teacher daily to instruct high school and Avanza students, as well as adult classes two evenings weekly.
-Summer Camp. During the school holidays, approximately 140 students from all 3 villages attend PPM’s summer camp each year
-Adult Education. PPM facilitates adult INEA certification.
