Celebrating Gratitude, Community, and Cultural Exchange at PEACE Punta de Mita
PEACE Punta de Mita celebrated Thanksgiving with students from four educational programs, blending American and Mexican traditions to emphasize gratitude, community connection, and cultural exchange.
Although Thanksgiving is not traditionally observed in Mexico, PEACE Punta de Mita made the celebration meaningful for its students by infusing it with local culture. Executive Director José Antonio Salgado spearheaded the initiative, bringing together participants from four educational programs: Campeones Jr. (elementary), Campeones (middle school), Prepanet (high school), and Click On and Keep Going (adult education).
The event featured traditional Mexican and American cuisine, including "warm rotisserie chicken served with potatoes cooked in its juices, coleslaw, and turkey." Before the meal, staff explained Thanksgiving's historical roots, emphasizing universal themes of "appreciation, reflection, and unity."
The gathering created space for meaningful connection. Students and staff shared food while expressing gratitude for their educational opportunities, supportive mentors, and community. Participants reflected on personal growth throughout the year and appreciated being part of an organization where they "feel supported, encouraged, and seen."
Beyond celebration, the organization framed the event as demonstrating cultural exchange's power within Punta de Mita's diverse environment. The experience illustrated how gratitude transcends cultural boundaries through both established and emerging traditions, communal meals, and genuine human connection.
The organization concluded by thanking supporters whose contributions strengthen programming and shape student futures.
