In the heart of Punta de Mita, students from the PEACE CAMPEONES program have embarked on their annual Community Project, a longstanding tradition in the CAMPEONES program in which students apply their learned skills to make a lasting positive impact in the community. This year’s Community Project is the Mita Miramar Project in which the students will work to revamp one of the public entrances to Punta de Mita beach, making it the most ambitious project to date. The CAMPEONES’ goals are to beautify the area while also to connecting and strengthening community ties, leaving a legacy for future generations.
Despite being a meeting point for many, the viewpoint is decidedly lacking in splendor; the great potential for beauty has been the driving force behind these young people's actions. The community has come together in a strong show of support for this noble cause through events such as bazaar sales at the PEACE facilities and an unforgettable Movie Night.
From the outset, students organized teams to tackle the crucial aspects of marketing, public relations, finance, event organization, and project leadership. These considerable efforts not only showcase the early application of essential skills but also underscore their resolve in overcoming significant financial hurdles. With all organizational and fundraising responsibilities resting on the students' shoulders, and with an estimated cost of $68,000 pesos (approximately $4,000 USD), their remarkable determination to reach their objective and bring it to fruition remains unwavering.
The legacy of previous community projects remains evident throughout the region. From the improvement of the kindergarten in Higuera Blanca to the rehabilitation of the basketball court known as "La Canchita" and the construction of the bus stop in Emiliano Zapata, these sustainable projects demonstrate the practical application of vital skills from an early age and reflect PEACE's enduring commitment to local communities.
The journey of the Mita Miramar Project is far from over. In May, the CAMPEONES are organizing an exciting bicycle race from Higuera Blanca to Emiliano Zapata which will culminate at the enhanced and improved viewpoint. This event will allow greater community participation to celebrate the success of Mita Miramar together and allow everyone to enjoy the best vista of Punta de Mita.
With the Mita Miramar Project, these exceptional young people are creating a beautiful aesthetic in their surroundings while also cultivating a sense of pride and community responsibility that will endure far beyond this project. In a world where human relationships are invaluable, our students’ community projects remind us of the transformative power of collaboration, connection, and commitment. We at PEACE are excited to see our CAMPEONES’ accomplishments!
